Laurel, considered the largest yacht produced in the United States, quickly lost that title. Shortly after its introduction, the Derecktor shipyard launched the 83.50-meter Cakewalk. Laurel's hull is made of steel and her superstructure is made of composite materials. This is done in order to reduce the overall weight of the vessel and to give her more stability. The yacht is equipped with special recycling and waste treatment facilities. Architect and designer Donald Starkey has tried to take into account all the wishes of the owner, one of the members of the Berwind family involved in investment and property management.
